Apartment Ideas

Welcome to Apartment Ideas.

This blog was created for my ideas I have for my future apartment.

What will my apartment look like? That is the $64,000.00 question.

Some of what you see here will be in that apartment.

Why DIY? Why not? It is fun. Once completed, you can say "I" did it!

These are just simply ideas I have seen over the past couple of years. Gradually over time, I will add more details to each of the ideas.

The links will take you to the source of the ideas. I will simply adapt the ideas to suit my own needs and what the apartment will be like once one has been obtained.

Each reader will have their own thoughts and ways they can adapt the ideas.

Once I move into my apartment, I will then update with "after" photos to show the end results of the ideas.

This blog will not only grow, but every idea will evolve. So simply reading from top to bottom (or bottom up) will not be enough. There are no "pages" at this time. They will be added in the future. For now this is as simple as it gets. One simple linear blog.

Enjoy.

Yeg

Update:

An apartment has been found. After one more legal step in the process, I will be able to take possession this December.

I will finally be able to implement some of the ideas in this blog.

I also wish to thank the many people involved who helped (and are currently helping) me in not only obtaining the apartment, but in basic furnishing (bed, table, lamps and a dresser) and other household goods that I had to leave behind when I left my former home a few years ago.

To respect their privacy, no names will be mentioned here. However, they will be personally thanked.

Two people however will be thanked here (though their names will be kept confidential):

When I was in need, they helped me over the past few years with a play to stay, delicious meals and support. Thank you so much.

Yeg

Fluffy towels

Vinegar is very inexpensive too.

A comment found on Instructables has an improvement on the idea.

I like the idea. I will however make a modification. Instead of attaching to walls. I will simply add a shower tension rod close to the ceiling (or at least high enough for a tall person not to hit their head with) and attach the showerhead and part of the tubing using zipties. This will not violate any leases. Thank you for the inspiration. This one is going on my "to do" list for my new apartment.

Renting and wallpaper don't mix. Until now!

http://issuu.com/lonnymag/docs/lonny5junejuly10-2/158

"Most renters don't consider wallpaper an option, but it is possible to hang it in such a way that doesn't jeopardize your security deposit and ensures you can use it again in your next pad. Somerville first marked off the bare walls with a grid of painter's masking tape. She then affixed double sided tape atop that. The double-sided tape keeps the paper in place, while the masking tape protects the wall underneath."

However, in my personal experience, masking tape (painter's or otherwise), usually leaves residue after a number of months or years. This should be taken into consideration when deciding on this option.

The idea is simple. Create a structure similar to the one shown in the picture. But no "loft bed" on top. It will be 7' long by 6' wide. The bed would be along the 7' side. Night shelf in usual place and a small desk/table next to the night shelf.

A "doorway" on the 6' side. Either a "real" door or a simple curtain.

Thermal curtains

http://sustainablog.org/2010/03/energy-saving-cheap-thermal-curtains/

Quote from the website:

"Thermal curtains are energy-efficient window shades that insulate against the cold around your windows. They are a thick and heavy buffer and can significantly decrease the money you spend on energy to heat your house.

Thermal curtains are a cheap and easy way to save energy costs in your home. They can largely be made with reused and recycled materials.

Roll them down on cold winter nights, or even during a hot summer day to block the sun’s rays and save energy costs!"

Make sure that the side facing outside is light in color to reflect the sun's rays.

Take 4 Adils legs (Ikea), and mount two sets on slats and screw the two slats to the table top with a hinged center slat to form cross-beam. (similar in idea to the "Angso" bench found in Ikea USA). This will add strength to the table.

Table & benches made from laminate flooring

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-the-Dining-TablePhotograph-version/

Use bed slats to form the substrate. Create two (tables) halves, so that by placing them side by side, a full size table can be made for guests. When not in "guest" mode, the other half can be used as a side table (behind couch, or along a wall, etc.).

Use aluminum picture frame instead of their custom steel. As the flooring is thin, it should actually fit into the picture frame. Suggest use the thinnest profile frame possible.

Their video also did show the same idea I had (about creating two half tables).

Suggest use a "locking" snap (similar to what is used on trunks) to lock the two halves. Or place knobs under the two halves of each table and use a small bungee loop to "lock" the halves.

Use Ikea legs (the cheapest ones). Use shorter Ikea legs for the benches.

Benno (DVD tower) as kitchen storage

This idea came from a reader on Apartment Therapy.

"I would say in general that the more tools (frequently used) that you can store in plain sight, the better. That's the way restaurants operate.

My most brilliant idea, if I do say so myself, was to install 2 IKEA CD towers (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/87305207/) in my kitchen to store spices (and other small things). I put 2 together. They are ideal because the shelves are adjustable, and there are lots of sections, so you can create many categories of spices, and everything is in plain sight. AND, they are not deep, so everything is easy to see and find. The dimensions are: Width: 7 7/8 ", Depth: 6 3/4 ", and Height: 79 1/2 ". The other advantage is that, because they are tall, they are really space saving. They can be installed in the smallest kitchen and not take up much space.

Begbugs: The ugly subject

Click me!

http://chipptips.com/BedBugs/

The bedbug matter is an ugly subject that unfortunately has to be discussed. It has spread globally. No longer a third-world issue, but now a first-world issue. There are many websites and books on the matter. Plenty to choose from. Some good, some bad. The common effective tool I have seen is high heat to kill them. Another important tool (for one of the three steps) is amorphous diatomaceous earth.

All Diatomaceous Earth is not created equal. Amorphous diatomaceous earth (also known as silicon dioxide) is derived from fresh water sources unlike diatomite diatomaceous earth, which can be derived from unnatural sources (and has been linked to cancer). It is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and USDA Certified for use in organic gardening. This means you are using a product that has undergone rigorous testing to make sure it is safe as well as effective. (http://chipptips.com/BedBugs/)

Ultimately there are three things that have to be done: Detecting, elimination and most importantly: prevention.

Will they ever be eradicated? Maybe. Until then, these three steps must be done.

Update: See the post on centipeds below.

I read about this insect on Apartment Therapy.

"Importantly, these bugs not only bite, but their bites spread the parasite that causes Chagas disease, a disorder that does damage to major organs and can be fatal." (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/the-assassin-bug-facts-dangers-prevention-203253)

I have not yet seen this in my area. Our harsh winters are nearly 6 months long.

I hope the centipede feeds on this one...

Yes, they are ugly indeed. Today I learned that they are in fact a beneficial insect. Why? An article in Apartment Therapy explays it.

"They kill other bugs. Like other centipedes, the house variety has poisonous venom that takes out roaches, moths, flies, and termites— you name the creepy crawly, and this centipede probably offs it. They even take care of bed bugs!" (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/the-house-centipede-203064)

8 spots to find free moving boxes

120709boxes-1.jpg

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/8-spots-to-get-moving-boxes-fr-1-103420

  • 1. Craigslist. A quick search in the free section (found underneath the "for sale" heading) offered up at least 20 sources for free boxes.
  • 2. Freecycle. We only found one posting with free boxes in our area when we searched yesterday (but it's still a great place to check back with before a move).
  • 3. Liquor stores. Try and ask for boxes with lids (otherwise, contents are bound to fall out in the moving truck). Boxes from a liquor store tend to be small and sturdy--great for books, CDs and DVDs.
  • 4. Bookstores. A perfect place to pick up boxes specifically for moving books.
  • 5. Grocery Stores. Ask them to save their apple boxes for you to pickup--these freebies are perfect for moving fragile items.
  • 6. McDonald's fry boxes. We spotted this solution from an Apartment Therapy reader. We were curious about this alternative and dug a little deeper. Apparently, these boxes are strong and also excellent for hauling heavy items that require a smaller sized box. Because the original contents of the box are frozen, you won't have to worry about the boxes being smelly (or greasy). McDonald's fry boxes also have a Facebook page, pointing out alternative uses.
  • 7. Starbucks. Having worked at Starbucks a long, long time ago, we know from experience that a store will receive anywhere from 1-2 shipments per week (so it's a good chance that they'll have boxes on a weekly basis). Because Starbucks boxes range in size, we like to ask them to hold their larger sized containers for storing our lighter, bulkier items.
  • 8. U-haul Box Exchange. U-haul has created a message board allowing you to search by location for free boxes in your area.

How to Unclog a Toilet Like a Plumber

Unclog a Toilet with Warm Water and Dishwasher Soap

Hot water and dish soap.

Secret Plumber Trick: Add Hot Water and dishwasher detergent. Add a few cups of hot water to the toilet bowl before you start plunging. After you pour the hot water in, let it sit for a few minutes. To put it mildly, the heat helps break the, um, stuff up. This will make unclogging the toilet with the plunger much, much easier. The heat from the hot water can sometimes break up the clog without plunging, so this could be a good tactic to use if you a clog a toilet at a friends house and you don’t want to face the embarrassment of asking for a plunger.

Also, try adding some dishwasher detergent to the mix. The soap can help break the clog up, as well.

"What do you do with your old plastic coffee can. Build a mini Hydroponics system of course. A Hydroponics system built into a coffee can that sounds like a percolator while it’s running, how funny is that? The piece of air tube going into the home made lift pump is from a small aquarium air pump. The tube comming out of the side goes right into the center of the net pot. The solution splashes onto the Hydroton right next to the plant stem but not directly at it. Build one of your own. It’s a lot of fun!"

How To Make Fart Hydrogen Sulphide Gas Smells Go Away

null

Light a match and then blow it out.

Knowing all this, and the fact that gasses will expand to fill any space, the best thing you can do (though it's not easy in an elevator) is to simply light a match. Lighting a match creates a phosphorus ignition event that will also ignite the sulfur in the air and totally remove (not mask) the smell.

"Smelly sulphur will ignite at around 250 degrees Celsius, which is around the same as the ignition temperature of phosphorus (the ingredient in a match head). When you light a match the hydrogen sulphide will decompose to form to form water (vapour) and sulphur dioxide. This means no more hydrogen sulphide, and no more smell!" (via WendyZuckerman.com)

How To Clean Burnt Pots & Scorched Pans

null

"What You Need

Materials

1 cup of vinegar
2 tablespoons of baking soda
1 cup of water (give or take depending on the size of your pan)
A burnt stainless steel pan that was left empty and unattended on a heated hot plate. oops!.
A scourer, because I can't find any way to avoid it entirely
Instructions
1. Fill the bottom of the pan with a layer of water.

2. Add the vinegar.

3. Bring the pan to the boil. It should be looking a bit cleaner already.

4. Remove the pan from the heat and add the baking soda. Expect fizz!

5. Empty the pan and scour as normal; if necessary add an extra bit of dry baking soda.

6. If there are any super stubborn marks that don't come off with scouring, make a paste of baking soda and a couple of drops of water. Leave the paste on the marks for a while and return to clean as normal.

7. Ta-da! Now you can put your feet up and enjoy the many hours you saved yourself standing over the sink.

Additional Notes:

I'm almost ashamed to say, this is not my first time burning a frying pan (hopefully it is my last) and you can get them clean with just baking soda, water and a scourer if you're super committed. But this is much, much easier. I've also been told that this works really well for baked on food and grime especially milk."

"A box fan, a furnace filter, three pieces of cardboard, and a little duct tape are all it takes to build a simple spray booth that sets up in minutes in front of a window or doorway, allowing you to spray-paint or clear-finish parts and small projects."

Hand/foot crank grinder

the-workshop-book4sm

"Years ago, when I worked in a shop without electricity, I had a hand-cranked grinder. It did the job, and I liked the slow speed, but I found it irritating to hold the tool with one hand and crank with the other. Fred Matlack converted his handcranked grinder to foot power by adding a rope and a hinged pedal. He gets the wheel going with the crank, then keeps it going with the pedal. The arrangement frees both hands to guide the tool."

Square Shopping Pail

Four-gallon rigid-plastic square buckets can often be found for free (although sold online for $5 and up). Try local restaurants, as they often buy frozen fruit or other foods in these containers. I’ve found these to be super useful for carrying groceries. For several years, they’ve been my regular totes. Unlike canvas or other sacks, these can’t leak, stain, or tip over easily in the car. They have a handle. You can load them up with heavy bottles or cans and still easily carry two pails. If there’s a spill, they rinse out. Not in use, they stack.

Well documented hack and instructions. Beautiful! I am planning to do the same with wood instead of aluminium. Though the aluminium makes it look wonderful. Wood is easier to cut, drill and to purchase. I am thinking of using the Sultan Lade slats for the sides. I look forward to creating this one. (once I am able to afford the tools and aluminium, I will “upgrade” to Spookalilly’s version.)

LACK as small server rack on wheels

1-place wheels as shown on image.
2-instead of leaving the middle part without a "shelf", stack (and attaching) the second lack on top of the upside down lack top from a legless LACK.

Use bottom LACK to support devices (except wifi router, as it needs to be high up to transmit properly). Use (if possible) "cube" panels from dollarama to enclose the 3 fixed sides and front side as a "door". Do not use solid enclosure (to avoid heat build-up)

Use lack rack for Apple G4 cube too.

Vodka Air freshner

"Not only does this sprayable freshener smell wonderfully uplifting, it actually cleans the air, killing odor causing bacteria. (A natural replacement for Lysol!!) I use this to deodorize my compost and garbage cans/lids in between cleanings and to keep the bathroom smelling fresh. Unfortunately it doesn't work on the pets... : )

Ok, here's what you need to make this magic happen:

·         cheap vodka (aka bacteria killer)
·         small unused spray bottle
·         essential oil of choice (I use Sweet Orange, but Lavendar and Lemongrass are also great)
·         small funnel

The How-To:

Add 40-50 drops of essential oil to the spray bottle.
Using your funnel, fill the bottle half way up with vodka.
Fill it the rest of the way up with water, distilled if you have it. (Not to worry if you don't! Tap will do.)
Shake!"

As a final step, give them a spin (just like the spin cycle of your washer) to get them partially dry. This also prevents the stretching that can occur when you hang a sopping wet garment. You may want to pick one up specifically for the laundry room so you don't have to share with your salads. Above, the OXO SoftWorks Salad Spinner from Amazon; $37.45.

http://www.thenshemade.com/2010/08/souper-storage-idea.html
